Albania has improved for the second year in a row in the Democracy Index, published by the well-known magazine The Economist, ranking 68th, from 71st last year.
Albania ranks better than Northern Macedonia (73), Montenegro (74), Bosnia and Herzegovina (95), while the best in the region is Serbia, in 63rd place.
In 2021, our country entered the second group for the first time.
Previously, Albania was ranked in the third group of countries with hybrid democracies. The first group is that of full democracy and the fourth is that of authoritarian.
Albania in this year’s ranking had 6.11 points, with an improvement from the previous year, when the indicator was 6.08 points (out of 10 possible points, the fewer points, the worse the ranking is). This is the highest result since Albania received, since 2006, when this index was published.
The Democracy Index is based on five categories: electoral process and pluralism, government functioning, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties.
Based on its results in a range of indicators within these categories, each country is then classified as one of four types of regime: “full democracy”, “troubled democracy”, “hybrid regime” or “authoritarian regime”.
