A group of indigenous people in Brazil have joined efforts to find British journalist Dom Phillips and his local aide Bruno Pereira in the Amazon jungle.
Their case has caused quite a bit of confusion: President Jair Bolsonaro said human remains were found during the search that has been going on for several days and that a DNA verification process is underway to see who they belong to.
Relatives of Phillips and Pereiras also say authorities have informed them of the finding of the two bodies. But local police and indigenous leaders have denied the reports, telling the BBC there was a communication error.
Local groups say the two men had received several threats for their work in support of indigenous rights in the region. They were traveling by boat in the area when they disappeared, as they are known to know the region very well.
Phillips has lived in Brazil for more than a decade and has been a longtime collaborator with the Guardian, researching a book. Pereira is an expert on the isolated tribes of the Amazon.
Days before the pair disappeared, indigenous groups say the latter had been threatened for his campaign against illegal fishing in the area which is also the way illegal gold diggers, such as drug traffickers smuggling cocaine from neighboring Peru.
