The European Commission today proposed extending the use of digital certificates until June 30, 2023, adding that COVID is still widespread in Europe and that citizens should use the certificates in case of further travel restrictions due to epidemiological measures.
“We need to be ready for a possible increase in infections in the second half of this year or for the emergence of new variants,” the EC said.
The Commission notes that COVID certificates are an “extraordinary measure” and will be revoked when they are no longer needed. The Commission also proposed the inclusion of high quality laboratory tests for antigen among the types of tests for which a test certificate can be issued, as well as a record of the number of doses administered in each Member State, not just the one that issued it. .
The European Parliament and the Council of the EU must decide on the EC proposal to enter into legal proceedings.
