The European Union has reiterated its call on all candidate countries, including Serbia, to comply with the bloc’s decisions regarding sanctions against Russia over the start of its occupation of Ukraine.
European Commissioner for Enlargement Ana Pisonero said “candidate countries such as Serbia expect to” join the EU in foreign and security policy “.
European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer also said that in the case of EU sanctions against Russia, all partner countries and friends of the European bloc expect to support the sanctions.
“I think this applies to all friends, neighbors and partner countries. We believe we are at a historic moment and it is time to take action. “We urge everyone to apply sanctions in a coordinated manner,” he said, referring to questions about the stances of non-EU countries that have not backed sanctions on Russia. Among the countries that have not supported the sanctions are Serbia, Belarus, but also Switzerland.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has said his country fully supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but Belgrade will not follow the EU’s example of sanctioning Moscow.
