EU Commissioner Janez Lenarcic said in a statement today that the European Union would add 50m euros in humanitarian aid to war-torn Ukraine.
“The European Union will allocate 50 million euros in humanitarian aid to support those affected by the Russian occupation of Ukraine,” Lenarcic said.
The aid package includes 45m euros for humanitarian projects in Ukraine and 5m euros for neighboring Moldova, despite the fact that no country is a member of the EU.
He said the funds will be used for urgent humanitarian needs by providing emergency medical services, drinking water supply, shelter and protection.
“With millions of people on the move or trapped in active war zones, the needs in Ukraine are already massive. “Now we have to be prepared for a further escalation of Russia’s relentless attacks on Ukraine, especially in the east,” he said.
The EU has so far pledged 143m euros in humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and this funding is part of a 1 billion-euro support package promised by the European Commission earlier this month.
