The identities of 31 people out of 81 men executed by the Saudi government in a single day on the weekend were released today.
According to the British Daily Mail, half of those executed came from the Shia Muslim minority that has been involved in anti-government protests for several years in the eastern regions.
Saturday’s mass executions by Riyadh authorities also included foreign terrorists convicted of killing civilians as well as others who received capital sentences for the unsubstantiated charge of “deviant faith.”
The 31 men executed in the bloody campaign come from the eastern Qatif region which has historically been a hotspot between the locals and the Sunni Muslim-dominated central government.
The riots, according to the Daily Mail, began in 2017 when authorities forcibly evicted residents from the town of Awamiyah, where 25 people lost their lives in the country of about 30,000 residents.
Asaad Makki Al Shub’bar Ali, 37, was arrested driving while taking his wife to the school where he worked, accused of participating in political demonstrations and links to terrorist organizations.
According to the Saudi human rights organization he was tortured before the execution.
Another executed is Mohammed al-Shakhouri, 27, tortured, held in complete isolation, who had no contact with relatives at least six months before the execution.
The proceedings against him had started in 2019, without a defense lawyer and with confessions obtained through torture, writes the rights organization.
Another killed is 30-year-old Aqil Hassan al-Faraj, 30, who was beaten to death and later charged with aiding and abetting terrorist groups and arms smuggling.
The Saudi authorities have not indicated how the persons were executed, whether it is the traditional hanging, or with a firing squad.
Relatives say the bodies of the deceased have not been returned to the families for the funerals, causing another agitation motive.
Ali Adubusi, director of the Saudi rights group ESOHR, said: “We have details of some of the cases, and the documents show that no blood was found in any of these people.”
The massacre occurred days after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had said executions would be reduced.
