New York has diagnosed the first case of polio in nearly a decade across the US.
The victim is a young man from Rockland County. The unvaccinated youth began experiencing weakness and paralysis about a month ago, the county’s Health Commissioner said Thursday.
The case comes nearly a month after the UK’s Health Safety Agency warned it had detected poliovirus in surveillance of sewage samples in London, although no cases had been identified there.
Poliomyelitis is an infection caused by the poliovirus. About 1 in 4 infected people have flu-like symptoms, including sore throat, fever, fatigue, nausea, headache and stomach pain. About 1 in 200 will develop more serious symptoms that include tingling and numbness in the legs, an infection of the brain or spinal cord, and paralysis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Treatment to address symptoms may include muscle relaxant medications and physical therapy. However, any paralysis caused by polio is permanent.
This is the first case of polio diagnosed in the United States since 2013.
