A giant garden of unusual sculptures has been discovered in Farikala, Finland, following the death of a self-improvised artist isolated from community life.
Veijo Rönkkönen, the sculptor born in 1944, lived in the countryside but did not see or talk to people, and as a result no one knew exactly how he spent his time at home.
But this was discovered after his death in 2010, with the discovery of more than 500 sculptures scattered in the woods of the house where he lived.
Although many of the sculptures look macabre or nude, authorities have opened the garden in the form of a museum that attracts several thousand visitors a year, to the village of Farikala near the border with Russia.
After the sculptor’s death the garden and the unmaintained house were bought by a businessman who was the initiator of turning the place into a museum.
Many of the sculpture figures are placed in athletic or yoga practice positions.
In the mouths of some of the creations there are real human teeth, and voices are heard from apparatus installed in some of them.
Despite Rönkkönen’s withdrawn nature, he reportedly welcomed visitors to his garden.
The man never sparked conversations but reportedly answered visitors’ questions about the sculptures. Critics have praised the work done but are divided on the subject of the atheism of the human physique or the exaggerated details in many of the creations.
