German European Minister Anna Lührmann is visiting Northern Macedonia and Albania for the first time.
According to a statement from the German Foreign Ministry, the green politician will meet on Monday (January 17th) in Skopje with the President of Northern Macedonia, Stevo Perandovski, the Prime Minister-designate, Dimitar Kovacevski (SDSM), the Deputy Prime Minister-designate. Bojan Maricic, Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani (DUI), as well as representatives of civil society. In Albania, the new German minister will meet on Tuesday (18.01) with Prime Minister Edi Rama (SP) and Deputy Foreign Minister Megi Fino. In addition to civil society representatives, the Minister will also meet with Albert Hani, Chairman of the Regional Bureau of Youth Cooperation (RYCO).
Continuity with new focus
The talks will focus on the integration of Northern Macedonia and Albania in the region, as well as internal reforms. According to a statement from the German Foreign Ministry, Lührmann said before the start of the negotiations: “Both countries have met the conditions, so the intergovernmental conferences should start immediately. We keep our word. “For the continuation of the road to the EU, it remains crucial that the reforms and good governance continue”, the above-mentioned announcement was quoted as saying by the minister on Sunday (January 16th) evening in Berlin. In Tirana, the German minister will also discuss Albania’s role as a member of the UN Security Council.
Lührmann thus remains entirely in line with her predecessor, Michael Roth, of the Social Democratic Party, who is now chair of the Parliamentary Committee on European Union Affairs. German foreigners passed into the hands of the Greens.
Like its predecessor, Lührmann is expected to be the region’s strong advocate in the EU, but also to address potential problems in bilateral talks. One of the issues that will be the topic of talks with civil society in Tirana is climate protection, sources from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs told DW.

Northern Macedonia and Albania are the first two countries, after France in December, that the German European Minister has been visiting since taking office in December last year. This is a proof that the new government between the Greens, the Social Democrats and the Liberals, as it has expressed in the coalition agreement, takes seriously the European perspective of the region.
