The 78th edition of the Golden Globe Awards was moved from January to February 28 due to the pandemic.
Prize winners, even those in their own homes, learned everything through zoom. Nomination in 25 categories from cinema and television, was made on 3 February.
The first two awards went to two actors of color, both British in supporting roles, Daniel Kaluuya, for Judas and the Black Messiah, and John Boyega, for Small Ax. Perhaps the most applauding award of the evening was that of Best Supporting Actor who went to the late Chadwick Boseman, who died in August at the age of just 43 from cancer.
But before that, he had managed to shine with his outstanding performance at Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and the acclaim even reached postmortem. Best Actress is also an African-American, Andra Day for The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
This is a direct response to the allegations made by l’Hfpa (Hollywood Foreign Press Association), the association of foreign journalists that presents the award led by Ali Sar, and accused of non-involvement and lack of transparency, as among its 87 members there is no person of color. “Amy Poelher and Tina Fey themselves mocked this fact: Hfpa consists of almost 90 non-colored journalists and some of them may be ghosts”, was their joke.
As expected, The Crown with 6 nominations was named Best Drama TV Series, Best Picture went to Nomadland, Best Director went to Chloé Zhao, Best Comedy was Laura Pausini’s Borat won best song.
