The industrial heart of Ukraine is now burning to the core. The city of Severodonetsk has been the focal point of Russian occupation in the east for weeks and it seems they are getting closer and closer to taking control of the city.
Ukrainian troops have been forced to gather in an increasingly small pocket, including the large nitrogen chemical plant, which has housed hundreds of civilians.
According to the regional governor, a large fire broke out as a result of continuous bombardment on this plant, while tens of tons of oil continue to flow, after the shocks.
Sergei Haidai told local TV that the Russians now controlled most of the city, even though the situation was “under control”.
In recent days, Ukrainian officials have warned that they are running out of ammunition as they eagerly await new supplies from the west.
While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that the fight for the strategic city may dictate the outcome of the war in the east of the country.
“Severodonetsk remains the epicenter of the confrontation in Donbas”said Zelensky. “This is a very tough battle, very difficult… Probably one of the most difficult in all this war.” he added. ”
Severodonetsk has seen permanent fighting since 2014, when Russian-backed separatists took control of two territories there, the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic.
