Experienced climber Filippo Bari, 27, had taken a happy photo with the comment ‘Look where I am’ just minutes before he was crushed to death by ice and rocks in the terrifying avalanche that killed at least seven other hikers.
A few minutes before he lost his life in the Alps, Bari had sent the photo to his family.
He was climbing the Marmolada peak in the Dolomites with his friends when a large chunk of the glacier suddenly broke off, unleashing an avalanche of ice, snow and rocks on Sunday.
In addition to the seven confirmed dead, five other climbers are missing as hopes of finding survivors are fading fast.
His brother Andrea said that the photo was sent to him by the deceased 20 minutes before the tragedy.
“Filippo adored mountains and nature in general. He always went prepared on his trips, but fate is sometimes cruel”.
Storms have hampered searches for hikers still missing in the Marmolada glacier tragedy.
At least seven people died and nine were injured in the horrific incident on Sunday evening, which happened as dozens of hikers were walking, some tied to each other with ropes.
