Strawberry farmers have come out again this Thursday in protest in front of the municipality of Fier.
Also supported by the United Farmers Union with Eduard Sharka as chairman, they have gathered in front of the municipality and are seeking compensation for the damage caused by the December 12, 2021 flood.
In late December, they met with Mayor Armando Subashi who promised them a solution, but it seems the situation remains the same.
“We were at the mayor’s office two weeks ago, because they did not even bother to come and see the damage we had. He promised to return the answer in two or three days. Two or three weeks have passed, no answer. We want nothing more than what belongs to us by law. We want neither mercy nor charity. The law says it owes us (compensation). If they think it does not belong to us, let them know and we will go to court“, Says a farmer.
The chairman of the farmers’ union says that over 30 hectares of strawberry greenhouses have been destroyed and no one has come to see the damage:
“The mayor promised us to set up a commission to assess the damage. It was unacceptable to us that the mayor said we would look at the law. It is unacceptable for an institution to say that we will seek interpretation of the law, while the law has been out for two years. The law speaks clearly. The local government has a legal obligation to assess the damage and compensate farmers for the damage caused by natural disasters. Today, after a month, no one has come to see the damage. “Over 30 hectares of greenhouses with strawberries have been damaged.”
