Libby Sinden broke her back jumping off the ‘Devil’s Bridge’ in Cumbria in northern Britain last July, in a reckless move that left her in a wheelchair for months and could have cost her even more .
The young health worker from Preston dared to jump into the cool water of the River Lune as her friends filmed on their mobile phones.
But she later says that the impact of the crash was “like hitting a brick wall” which immediately broke one of her vertebrae.
Now after a year, Libby remembers the moment that “changed her life” giving a rude warning so that others do not suffer what she found herself.
By posting the terrifying moment on TikTok @libby_sindenshe tells how, looking for the thrill of the moment, she jumped from a height into the water below the bridge.
After the jump, she can be heard saying “I killed my back” as she manages to swim to shore, before the video cuts to news agencies describing the accident and the emergency helicopter that came to pick her up.
Libby had waited in pain for three hours until medical help arrived.
Then at Preston Hospital, in a six-hour operation on her spine, metal rods and titanium screws were installed to reattach the bones.
She then spent a week in hospital and four months in a wheelchair, having to learn to walk again.
She tells about Manchester Evening News: “I believe that I was one of the lucky ones that I was not paralyzed, or that I had come across stones under the water”.
“As soon as I let go I felt a bit of fear before I hit the water as I realized how high it was. I hit the water as if it were something stationary and fluid, just like hitting a brick wall.”
“For a thread I could have been paralyzed or killed myself. They took me out of the water and I started to get cold, I had hypothermia, when I finally went to the hospital they took me for emergency surgery”.
“They put three metal rods and six screws into my spine to hold it together.”
“My message to people is that one small thoughtless decision can change your life, so don’t do it.”
Many netizens thanked the girl for sharing her experience.
One of them said: “It’s sad but people have died jumping from this bridge. A few small warning signs are not enough.”
