Rosalia Lombardo is one of 160 children who died of pneumonia in 1920 in Sicily.
Because of her extremely well-preserved and almost vibrant face, eyelashes, hair and dress, she is often known as “the most beautiful mummy in the world”.
For the anthropologist Dario Piombino-Mascali, it is important to tell the stories of the children of the Capuchin Catacombs!
“I was a lucky child, but I know that some children were not so lucky and died prematurely. “I want to make sure that the stories and their presence on this Earth are not forgotten.” he said.
Her untimely death left her father so heartbroken that he approached the famous embalmer, Alfredo Salafia, and asked him to save Rosalia’s body.
Alfredo Salafia performed this operation, so much so that almost a hundred years after her death, the little girl seems to be simply napping in the glass box in the catacombs of the cappuccinos of Palermo in Italy.
Her internal organs are also intact, as revealed by X-ray scans. Nicknamed the “sleeping beauty”, Rosalia Lombardo has earned a reputation as one of the most preserved mummies in the world.
Researcher Piombino-Mascali made this discovery in 2009 when he noticed that museum workers had moved her coffin causing her body to shift slightly, which allowed her to see her eyelids better than ever before. . Piombino-Mascali realized that Rosalia’s eyes were not completely closed and were never closed.
But his real discovery was the secret formula that Alfredo Salafia had used to keep Rosalia’s body in perfect condition.
In 2009, Piombino-Mascali tracked down Alfredo Salafia’s living relatives and found in their possession documents belonging to Salafia, where he had recorded his secret procedure.
Unlike typical embalming, where internal organs are removed and empty cavities are filled with natron salts to dry the body completely, Salafia made a small puncture in the body and injected a mixture of formalin, zinc salts, alcohol, salicylic acid and glycerin.
Each ingredient in the mix performed a unique job. Formalin killed all the bacteria, glycerin ensured her body did not dry out and salicylic acid wiped away any fungus in the meat. The magic ingredient was zinc salts that hardened Rosalia’s body, giving it stiffness and preventing the cheeks and nasal cavities from penetrating.
The “sleeping beauty” is one of eight thousand mummies in the Capuchin Catacombs of Sicily and one of the last corpses to be admitted to the catacombs.
