Andrei Chikatilo is one of the most horrific serial killers in the world. His gruesome story speaks of cannibalism, macabre crimes, and it is also said that he raped the victims after he had killed them.
Named “The Red Ripper”, the cannibal killer committed crimes for a full 12 years, killing at least 53 women and children.
Andrei Chikatilo was born in 1936 in the village of Yablunchne, Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union.
Born of poor parents during a devastating famine, the hungry family was forced to eat grass and leaves to survive. Andrei was also told by his mother that before his birth, his older brother had been abducted and “eaten” by hungry neighbors.
Although it was never proven whether this was true, it would be the first time Chikatilo would have been introduced to the idea of cannibalism.
He grew constantly hungry while witnessing the horrors of war when Nazi Germany invaded Ukraine during World War II. It is thought he may have been present when his mother was raped by German troops. Chikatilo would also feel his father’s public shame after being branded a traitor to be captured by Nazi troops when he was wounded fighting for the Russian army. At the time, captives were shunned when they returned home to “allow themselves to be imprisoned.”
The evil killer grew up as an ardent communist, before discovering he was suffering from impotence in his early teens. He struggled to talk to the girls during his time at school and blamed his failure to enter Moscow State University for his father’s dirty war past.
After a failed relationship due to his impotence, he continued to marry Feodosia Odnacheva after being introduced by his sister. In a 1993 interview, the killer revealed: “The girls were following me, whispering that I was impotent. I was very ashamed. I tried to hang myself. My mother and some new neighbors pulled me out of the loop. Well, I thought no one would want such a shy man. So I had to flee from there, away from my homeland. ”
Despite the couple struggling with intimacy, wife Feodosia gave birth to a daughter and four years later a son, who would follow in her father’s footsteps and live a life of crime. He went on to become a teacher, ridiculed by students when he failed to maintain control of his noisy classroom and was forced to resign after sexually assaulting female and male students.
The difficult life brought the killer closer to his first victim, nine-year-old student Lena Zakontnova. He lured the girl to an old house he had recently bought and tried to rape her. When she fought, he strangled her before she spilled after stabbing her three times in the stomach – her body was later thrown into a nearby river.
Chikatilo was arrested but later released when his wife provided an alibi to cover up his crime – despite all the evidence linking him to the crime. Worker Alexander Kravchenko was found guilty of aggravated murder and sentenced to death in 1983.
The evil killer was able to continue his deadly crime fun after he described the ‘grain’ of his first murder. In 1981, Chikatilo killed his second victim, Larisa Tkachenko, and a year later, he slaughtered thirteen-year-old Lyuba Biryuk. He mutilated Larissa’s body with his teeth and bit one of her nipples after beating her to death. Lyuba was stabbed 22 times before her eyes were gouged out. Chikatilo’s killings became more frequent and increasingly violent.
It would target vulnerable or homeless young women and children, chasing bus and train stations, often luring them into nearby forests.
By 1983, the cannibal had killed at least 20 people and managed to escape justice when police failed to link him to the crime scene with DNA evidence, despite his name being on file. In 1984 he was arrested and placed under house arrest in September of that year after killing at least 30 people.
Moscow’s best detectives rallied to identify the ‘sex-mad’ killer, and police began patrolling trains and bus stops.
In September 1984, he was arrested when two officers dressed as civilians arrested him after they saw him talking to a young woman at a bus stop in his hometown, Rostov.
But police failed to link him to any murder after a DNA error and he stayed in the cell only three months for minor offenses.
He continued to kill 20 other people, although the true number of his victims is not known, while it is thought that he eventually killed at least 56 victims. The bodies were often found with the removed sexual organ, which he is thought to have eaten after being mutilated.
He would eventually fall into the trap in 1990, when he was caught again by police as he approached young boys on the street carrying his ‘serial killer’ bag. He was arrested on Nov. 20 and remained silent for just over a week before confessing to the gruesome killings.
The killer burst into tears initially admitting 36 murders, while he later confessed to 20 more murders.
Chikatilo faced trial in April 1992 and was charged with 53 counts of murder, five counts of sexually assaulting a minor, and his conviction was the first major media event since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
