The death toll from an avalanche in the Italian Dolomites rose to nine on Wednesday after the discovery of two more bodies.
The victims were found after high temperatures melted the ice further, causing the bodies to rise to the surface, according to the head of the mountain rescue team Maurizio Dellantonio.
“The drones today flew over the same areas as the previous days. What has changed compared to yesterday is that the very strong sun has melted the mass of ice causing the bodies to come to the surface. “Tomorrow, as had been warned, there will be an intervention by a team on the glacier in the part bottom of the landslide with the use of police dogs. A helicopter will stay in the air all the time and with a fixed rope will keep the operators connected to the glacier and will be ready to perform a rescue if necessary”, says Maurizio Dellantonio.
The avalanche struck a day after a record temperature of 10 degrees Celsius was recorded on the summit of Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Italian Dolomites. Meanwhile, three people are still missing.
The updated death toll came after several families accused Italian authorities of leaving the glacier open despite the apparently dangerous climbing conditions.
Glaciers in Europe’s Alps are becoming more unstable and dangerous as rising temperatures, driven by climate change, are damaging what were long considered dormant, almost fossilized ice sheets. Experts say that these glaciers are being damaged inland, making it almost impossible to accurately predict their collapse.
