The Taliban authorities in Afghanistan announced that they had stopped search and rescue operations after the June 22 earthquake that hit the eastern part of the country, as the number of victims has already reached 1150 people.
Abdul Wahid Rayan, director of the state-run Bakhtar news agency, said the death toll had risen to 1,150 from the 1,000 previously reported, with at least 1,600 injured.
Earlier, on June 24, Muhammad Nassim Haqqani, a Taliban spokesman for the Ministry of Disaster Management, told the media that more than 10,000 homes had been partially or completely destroyed in the quake that struck the eastern part of the country, near the border with Pakistan.
“Rescue operations are over,” Haqqani said, without elaborating on why they were halting search and rescue operations just 48 hours after the tragic quake.
