A former nurse from Tennessee in the US has been found guilty of accidentally killing a patient she injected with paralytic medication instead of the sedative she needed.
RaDonda Vaught, 38, was found guilty of negligent murder after a three-day trial in Nashville that was closely followed by professional doctors, writes the local network The Tennessean .
Vaught, a former Vanderbilt center nurse, was indicted in December 2017 for the death of Charlene Murphey, whom she had injected with the strong paralyzing medication ‘vecuronium’, instead of the dose of the sedative called ‘Versed’.
Prosecutors said the unintentional mess had left Murphey unable to breathe. The 75-year-old had died a day later after the injection caused her ‘brain death’.
Vaught had admitted her mistake to the woman who had come to the hospital for a head hematoma.
“I am relieved that this part of the process is closed, which had lasted for four and a half years in the legal system,” Vaught told reporters.
Prosecutors said Vaught despite the warnings had received the wrong medication from the electronic ampoule cabinet even though he was asked to check the name of the medicine by writing it down.
Vaught and her lawyer claimed they were becoming the main object of accusations from the Vanderbilt center to remove responsibility from her.
“Someone had to pay, so it was up to me to be me, everyone sees this,” said the accused.
The sentence for Vaught will be handed down on May 13th. She faces up to six years in prison for major negligence in office, and one to two years on a charge of criminal negligent homicide.
