Chris Rock actor Rose Rock’s mother has reacted for the first time after the incident in which her son was involved in the 94th Academy Awards ceremony.
She said she initially thought the incident was staged while watching it during the broadcast from her home, but realized it was true when Smith started screaming.
“When he hit Chris, he hit us all. He really hit me. Because when it hurts my baby, it hurts me. No one listened to his speech. No one was able to be attentive at the moment, because everyone was sitting there like, “What happened?” she said.
Smith has since resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is hosting the Oscars.
The academy also barred the actor from attending its events for the next ten years, and Academy President David Rubin and CEO Diane Hudson apologized to Rock in a statement.
