Russian aggression in Ukraine and the stability of the Western Balkans were part of discussions at a meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson told VOA that during the meeting, Mr. Sullivan thanked Prime Minister Kurti for Kosovo’s readiness to receive Afghan refugees.
“They exchanged views on Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, including the provision of humanitarian aid from Kosovo to the people of Ukraine and the imposition of sanctions against Russia.“, She said, underlining that stability in the Western Balkans was also discussed at length.
Adviser Sullivan, she said, voiced US support for talks facilitated by the European Union to reach a comprehensive normalization agreement between Kosovo and Serbia and the need for further progress on key unresolved issues.
Mr Sullivan further welcomed Kosovo’s plans to move from its dependence on lignite coal to cleaner energy and to ensure a sustainable electricity supply.
Meanwhile, the Kosovo government said in a statement that Prime Minister Kurti thanked Mr. Sullivan for the American contribution and support for Kosovo and for lasting peace, long-term stability and regional security.
Prime Minister Kurti, the statement said, said that Kosovo “is prepared to deepen the partnership based on common values with the United States and is committed to its path of integration into the European Union and inclusion in the Program as soon as possible.” Partnership for Peace, as a first step towards NATO membership.
