Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has given one of the rare interviews of ERT1 “Sto Kentro” and journalist George Kouvaras. His Holiness refers in his interview to the war in Ukraine, the stance of the Russian Orthodox Church, the role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Hagia Sophia.
Asked about the attitude of the Church of Russia and the Patriarch of Moscow, Cyril, towards the war, the Ecumenical Patriarch underlined:
“It would not be possible for all the Churches not to condemn violence, war. But the Russian church disappointed us. I did not want the Church of Russia and Brother Patriarch Kirill to be this tragic exception. I do not know how it can be justified in his conscience. How will he justify it, how will history judge him. He had to stand up. Because one can oppose President Putin’s pressure.
It must react to the invasion of Ukraine and condemn the war as all other Orthodox primates did. He did not, this is to his detriment and I am very sorry.
We may have had other differences, the one known for the autocephaly of the Church of Ukraine, the difference we have for centuries, because the Russian Church is looking at the primacy of Constantinople, undermining the foundations of the throne of Constantinople, but I expected Brother Cyril at this point crisis, historical, to withstand the circumstances.
In need of sacrificing his throne, to say to Putin: ‘Mr. President, I can not agree with you, I resign, I leave’… I do not know what President Putin would have done if the Patriarch had reacted to his plans, but this is what we, the other Prelat brothers, would expect“.
