On Wednesday, the Russian intelligence chief compared the US State Department to the Nazi propaganda machine of World War II, built by Joseph Goebbels, saying Washington had launched a campaign of anti-Russian messages on all social media.
Sergei Naryshkin, head of the Foreign Intelligence Agency, said the United States was encouraging the spread of false information on the Telegram network in an attempt to “discredit” the political and military leadership in the eyes of the Russian people.
“Their actions have much in common with the traditions of the Ministry of Education and Propaganda of the Third Reich and its head, Joseph Goebbels,” Naryshkin said in a statement posted on the intelligence agency’s official website.
Naryshkin gave no evidence to support the claims of the so-called US-backed campaign. Russia has regularly accused the West of supporting and sponsoring anti-Russian movements, and in recent years has labeled dozens of independent human rights groups and the media in Russia “foreign agents.”
Representatives of the US State Department did not immediately respond to Naryshkin’s comments.
Since the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia has accelerated its campaign to suppress the opposition in the country. Journalists and other individuals risk up to 15 years in prison for publishing what Russia calls “fake news” about the military campaign.
Russia has sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine in what it calls a “special military operation” to downplay the country’s military capacity and to root out what it calls dangerous nationalists. Ukrainian forces have shown strong resistance and the West has imposed heavy sanctions on Russia.
