Russia has been accused of attacking Ukrainians with cluster bombs and vacuum bombs, weapons that have been strongly condemned by an international organization.
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch both said it was suspected that Russian forces had used widely banned cluster munitions. Amnesty’s allegations include an attack on a preschool in northeastern Ukraine at a time when civilians were being housed inside.
Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, told reporters after a meeting with members of the US Congress that Russia had used a thermobaric weapon, otherwise known as a “vacuum bomb”, during the offensive in her country. Such a bomb uses oxygen from the surrounding air to generate a high-temperature explosion, simultaneously producing a deadly shock wave and sucking oxygen from the lungs of anyone in the vicinity.
Bombs, also known as thermobaric charges, produce a shock wave significantly longer than that of a conventional explosive and are capable of evaporating the human body, foreign media say. However, there is still no official confirmation that thermobaric weapons were actually used in the conflict in Ukraine. Markarova said Ukraine was actively working with the US to get more weapons and tougher sanctions. “Russia has to pay dearly for what it is doing“, She said.
Democrat Brad Sherman, who was at the meeting, said the Ukrainians had requested a US-imposed no-fly zone over Ukraine, but he thought it was too dangerous because it could provoke a conflict with Russia.
