On Monday, the front page of the New York Times and many other Italian and international newspapers such as Repubblica, La Stampa and El Pais published a series of photos showing a Ukrainian family killed by an artillery shell.
But the most present photo in the newspapers was taken in Irpin, near Kiev, by the well-known American photojournalist Lynsey Addario.
That photo shows four people – a man, a woman and two children, lying on the ground, who have not let go of their backpacks and suitcases, – mother and two children killed by a Russian bomb, husband bloodied but still alive and some soldiers trying to give him first aid.
Like hundreds of other Ukrainian refugees, the four people portrayed in the photo had just tried to cross the Irpin River, which separates the city of the same name from Kiev. Russian shells hit them shortly after crossing as they were trying to reach the capital.
Irpin is a city of about 60,000 inhabitants west of Kiev. For several days it has been bombed by the Russian army, which has forced thousands of people to flee the city. To get away, however, you have to cross the river; but the bridge used to cross it, like many others, was destroyed by Ukrainian soldiers in recent days, with the intention of slowing down the Russians’ advance toward Kiev.
Therefore, those trying to get away from Irpin, have to go through the rubble, with a lot of difficulty. Various photos have been circulating these days showing Ukrainian soldiers helping various citizens, including the elderly, cross the rubble of several collapsed bridges.
On Sunday morning, local authorities warned citizens to be careful, as the road out of Irpin city is very dangerous due to Russian bombing. Despite this warning, many people had attempted to escape, which they ran in groups to escape the blows of the Russian army.
The latter, however, did not stop its bombing. The New York Times team was present at the scene and filmed everything that happened there.
Referring to what they have stated, the family photographed by Addario on Sunday had managed to cross the bridge and was hit by a bomb while walking along a road leading to Kiev.
The video published by the New York Times shows the moment of the explosion of the projectile, just a few meters away from the family. Immediately after the explosion, some other people are noticed running away, while some others are heard shouting for help and at the end, as if to add even more tragedy to the event, a dog is heard barking in the background.
In addition to the four family members, another person died in the blast, possibly a family friend who was helping them escape.
Another photo that has been widely circulated and published in various newspapers shows dozens of Ukrainian citizens hiding under a destroyed bridge while waiting to leave.
