The British government has announced the deployment of 350 additional troops in Poland to strengthen NATO’s eastern defenses amid rising tensions with Russia.
At a news conference with his Polish counterpart Mariusz Blaszczak, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace stressed the UK’s support for the Polish government in the face of “increasingly aggressive Russian military stances”.
“In that spirit of solidarity and of helping to share the challenges of each other’s resistance, we will add to those 100 ‘Royal Engineers’ in Poland another 350 British troops in a bilateral deployment to show that we can “We work together and send a strong signal that Britain and Poland stand side by side.”
Blaszczak, for his part, expressed gratitude for the reinforcements, stressing that they would “cooperate with the Polish armed forces to increase security, especially against the threat at the border.”
100 troops have already been deployed to Poland to help the recent migrant crisis.
The United Kingdom has joined efforts to resolve Ukraine’s growing crisis, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson visiting Kiev and speaking at a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenscu. British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is also scheduled to visit Kiev in the coming days.
NATO officials have assured Moscow that the alliance has no plans to expand further east and have called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to withdraw his forces from eastern Ukraine to prevent Europe from returning to the conflict.
“Russia has expressed concern about possible NATO aggression, but we have been clear that these concerns are essentially unfounded as NATO is a defensive alliance at its heart,” the British government said.
“But we want to work with Russia to ensure diplomatic security on this front. “It’s not about concessions, as the prime minister and other Western leaders have said that all European democracies have the right to join NATO.”
Moscow has amassed over 100,000 troops on its border with Ukraine. It has also deployed forces south in Crimea and north in Belarus.
President Putin has called the military exercises military exercises and denied allegations of Russian occupation, but has warned NATO against further enlargement in what Moscow sees as a factor influencing its region.
