The US Department of Justice announced that it is preparing for new Russian cyber attacks as more than three months have passed since the beginning of Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine.
National Security Division chief Matthew Olsen said Thursday that the Justice Department has focused specifically on the cyber threat coming from Russia and is preparing for the possibility of new attacks.
Mr. Olsen made the remarks at a conference of the Center for Cyber Defense, a NATO-accredited center. The Tallinn-based organization in Estonia this week approved Ukraine’s application to join as a “contributing participant”.
Mr Olsen’s comments echoed repeated warnings from the Biden administration throughout the Ukraine conflict that Russia was likely to launch cyber-attacks against the United States in response to Western sanctions.
In March, the FBI and the Cyber Security and Infrastructure Agency warned of “potential threats to US and international satellite communications networks.”
The warning came after a cyber attack on the US-based telecommunications company Viasat on February 24, the day Russia attacked Ukraine, an attack allegedly backed by Moscow.
The attack left tens of thousands of Ukrainian Viasat customers without satellite service.
Mr Olsen said the attack was “one of the many recent examples” of Russia’s malicious cyber activity.
