The United States has recently provided $ 17 million to strengthen the capacity of the Albanian army, said the Chief of General Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces, General Bajram Begaj.
In an interview with VOA, General Begaj said that during a meeting he held this week with US Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley, they discussed co-operation between the two countries, but also the war in Ukraine.
“The US state has allocated a $ 17 million grant budget to increase the armed forces’ defense force and increase its defense capabilities. I emphasize that any budget for the modernization of the Albanian Armed Forces goes to increase our defense capabilities. We have no intention of aggression or declaring war on anyone. We are simply in what NATO as an alliance required, to do protection and discouragement for every enemy or every adversary“, Said Begaj.
Earlier in the week, it was announced that Albania has purchased Javelin missile systems from the American company, Lockheed Martin.
General Begaj did not disclose how many anti-aircraft missiles Albania has purchased, but said that these weapons “will increase our anti-aircraft defense force”.
General Begaj said that the presence of American special forces will help advise the Albanian Armed Forces.
