A New York homeowner is accused today of taking his two tenants hostage to evict them ‘in person’. The development comes at a time when in New York the ban on evictions from homes until May 1 from the Covid-19 pandemic is in force.
Shawn Douglas is charged with the violent and shocking abduction of two tenants, whom he had tied up and thrown into his car, to then release them near a cemetery about 50km away.
The two victims already accuse Douglas of taking them hostage at gunpoint on his property in Albany, New York. He had tied them with plastic clips and put pillowcases on their heads before releasing them near a gallows in the Ghent area, about 50km away.
One of the victims had then managed to break free from the shackles and sounded the alarm at a house in Douglas.
“They are lucky to be alive. They could have been frozen from the cold there, ” said the sheriff Albany Craig Apple.
The media reported that the suspect has been released on bail but there are expected to be other defendants in the case.
The ban on leaving home even in case of non-payment of rent for New York, continues until May 1. Hundreds of such cases are expected to be opened in US courts after this deadline.
