The U.S. Air Force announced that a U.S. bomber with long-range nuclear capabilities flew over the capitals of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
The flight was a sign of solidarity with NATO allies, amid Western concerns about an increase in Russia’s aggression. “This mission sends a clear message that our commitment to our NATO allies is unwavering,” said Gen. Jeff Harrigian, commander of the U.S. Air Force in Europe and Africa.
“We are here together.” he said. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, once ruled by Moscow, are now members of NATO and the European Union. The three Baltic states have accepted NATO and US troops on their soil since 2014, when Russia invaded the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine, which is not a member of the alliance.
The bomber is one of four aircraft of its kind deployed in Norway on February 22 to operate in the strategic Arctic region for several weeks. It is the first time this type of aircraft has been deployed in NATO’s founding Norway, which shares a border with Russia in the Arctic. All bombers are accompanied by a 200-strong U.S. Air Force personnel.
