The United States sent nearly 5.2 million doses of Pfizer’s Covid 19 vaccine to Egypt and Nigeria on Thursday, a White House official told AFP.
The shipments are part of a global donation campaign from the United States. More than 400 million doses have already been shipped, up from 1.1 billion on target.
The White House official said about 3 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine have been shipped to Nigeria and over 2 million more doses to Egypt. The United States and other countries that produce pandemic vaccines have been criticized for not doing enough to curb the global spread of the virus.
According to Johns Hopkins University, just under 29 percent of Egypt’s population is fully vaccinated. Over 23,000 people have died from the coronavirus in Egypt. In Nigeria, only 2.7 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated, and over 3,000 deaths have been reported.
