The heat wave has created difficult conditions for many people across the United States.
The highest temperatures covered the northeastern part of America, while on the west coast they made it difficult for firefighting teams to work. Likewise, Europe continues to face high temperatures and fires across the continent.
California’s governor has declared a state of emergency in Marposa County as an oak forest fire continues to spread.
The situation is extremely dangerous in Yosemite National Park, where the rapid spread of flames threatens to turn it into one of the largest fires recorded this year. The sky above the park had all taken on a deep, orange color.
The fires burned houses and cars. Over six thousand people have been forced to leave as firefighters battle the blaze from the ground and air.
“We are fighting fire in a difficult terrain. It’s a tough battle”says Natash Fouts, of the California Fire Department.
The smoke can be seen from the International Space Station.
Much of the United States is dealing with a heat wave. Officials in South Dakota said a 22-year-old hiker died in Badlands National Park after running out of water supplies.
Temperatures were expected to reach over 38 degrees Celsius in some cities. New York City opened special cooling centers to help people who do not have access to air conditioning.

Due to the heat, organizers cut short the marathon that was taking place over the weekend in New York. While in Boston, a planned sports event was postponed to another date.
In Europe, the heat wave has claimed many lives in Spain and Portugal and continues to fuel fires across the continent.
The Italian government warned of high temperatures in 16 cities, while firefighters are dealing with nearly 33,000 fires. So far, Italy has reported 27,000 hectares burned, France 44,000 and Spain 19,000.
Fires on the Greek island of Lesbos burned houses and forced residents and tourists to evacuate. The evacuation order was sent by text message to cell phones. Local police said they had evacuated about 450 people from hotels and homes, while officers continued to search for others who may have refused to leave. The firefighting operation is supported by air with nine special aircraft and a firefighting helicopter.
The World Health Organization has sent instructions to central and local authorities to focus on saving lives and helping communities and residents as they face extreme heat.
