Millions of tons of wheat have been blocked in Ukrainian ports for months since the start of the Russian invasion.
The war between the two countries raised the price of grain all over the world. After three decades in Albania, the price of wheat increased by 20 Lek per kilogram.
“After 30 years, the price of wheat has increased. In previous years, we sold it at 30 Lek per kilogram, while this time it is 50 Lek per kilogram, but this does not mean that we as farmers earn more, considering that the costs of agricultural inputs have increased a lot.“, says farmer Ilir Cara.
Ilir Cara, from the village of Jubë i Durrës, planted wheat and corn on an area of 10 hectares. With the hope that the price of wheat will change for the better again, Iliri preferred not to sell the entire amount of wheat this time.
“We didn’t sell all the wheat, we sold a part enough to liquidate the debts I have with chemical fertilizers, because there is neither interest nor price“, he says.
While the costs of grain production have increased, the profit this time remains low. Iliri’s hope is that the price will change again, but this time in favor of the farmer.
“The ideal price would be 65,000 lek per quintal of wheat so that we would be somewhat satisfied to plant next yearCara adds.
Iliri and his colleagues would make more money this year if tax-free oil went to farmers before the harvest season.
“For wheat, we introduced the combine harvester when oil was 260 lek.”
In order to reduce the costs of grain production, according to the farmer, the Ministry of Agriculture should distribute tax-free oil to farmers before the arrival of spring.
“The ideal time for oil would be at the end of February, spring has a big plowing campaign, milling, planting, chemical fertilizers that will be bought for wheat, barley and oats. “
In our country, the number of greenhouses with vegetables is increasing, and the area of grain crops is shrinking, because the flour factories demand that they buy the grain of Albanian farmers cheaper than the grain of farmers from Russia and Serbia.
