Western countries must prepare for a “long war” in Ukraine, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned after talks at the White House with President Joe Biden.
“Wars are unpredictable in nature, and therefore we just have to prepare for a long time, because what we see is that this war has now turned into a war of destruction, where the Ukrainians are paying a high price for defending their country ”.
Stoltenberg also stressed that NATO must prevent the Russian invasion of Ukraine from escalating into a full-scale war between Russia and NATO.
“NATO’s responsibility is to help and support Ukraine. Most wars, and also most likely this war, will at some point end at the negotiating table. “But what we do know is that what is happening around a negotiating table is very closely linked to the situation on the ground, on the battlefield.”
Asked if Ukraine was being pressured by the West to accept concessions to negotiate peace, Stoltenberg said “it’s not up to the alliance what Ukraine should accept or not.”
The NATO chief declined to comment on whether the alliance was discussing maritime escorts for grain exports to Ukraine blocked by the Russians, but said he welcomed efforts to find a solution.
