There was a lot of controversy in the 1/8 draw of the Champions League this afternoon as Manchester United seemed to have been placed in the wrong pot.
At the official ceremony in Nyon, Switzerland, Villarreal’s name appeared and then former Arsenal star Andrey Arshavin chose the United ball in scenes that were extremely confusing for viewers watching the draw live.
The rules stipulate that both teams could not face each other as they had already competed in the same group, with United finishing at the top and Villarreal in second place.
Massive panic ensued, the ball left and the draw continued. Villarreal then learned they would play against United rivals Manchester City before the Red Devils learned they would face Paris Saint-Germain.
And this scene caused numerous reactions on social media, with some demanding the return of the lottery.
The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reported that it looked like the draw would be allowed to continue, but ESPN’s Alex Shae says UEFA is in discussions about whether it should be re-thrown.
Liverpool will play Red Salzburg, with Chelsea facing French champions Lillen in the first round by direct elimination.
Benfica will play Real Madrid, while Atletico will face Bayern Munich.
Here is the full draw:
