An amateur diver could not believe his eyes when he discovered an unusual fish at the bottom of the ocean.
48-year-old Josie Jones, while swimming submerged at the bottom of the sea shores in Victoria, Australia encountered a somewhat embarrassing creature.
She used her underwater camera to photograph the ‘penis worm’ creature, which she posted on social media. She added that she could not hold back the laughter when she first saw him.
“Some sea creatures can have fun with it,” wrote one commenter, to which Josie replied, “Because you have so much imagination.”
Another wrote: “They are sea cucumbers, some people eat them.”
The animal is actually not a sea cucumber but a ‘priapulida’, which also gets its name from the unusual shape, similar to the human penis.
Sea cucumber is another species which has the strongest skin.
Priapulidae live at shallower depths, up to 100 meters. They immerse themselves in the mud, with which they feed.
Josie is an active diving amateur and regularly helps clean up the local Rye Front Beach.
She says she does this for strange creatures like the sea cucumber to have a better life, while adding that she is not interested in the debate about the exact species of the animal.
“I have been cleaning this beach for ten years, so I know the difference between clean and polluted water. I take pictures to document the growth of seaweed and the addition of living things. If what I photographed is a sea cucumber or penis worm, the exact subspecies is only of interest to the obsessed. “Only about 160 marine species live under our runway,” said Josie.
