A woman who said more than two decades ago that a robber broke into an California apartment and killed her boyfriend is being charged as the perpetrator of the old incident, after sending an anonymous letter to police, investigators announced.
Jade Benning, who lived in the town of Santa Ana in January 1996, had told police that a colored suspect had entered the apartment where she lived with her 22-year-old boyfriend Christopher Hervey, and shot him several times with a knife, in an attack at 03.00 o’clock at night leaving him dead, police announced today.
Benning, also 22 at the time, had made “general statements” about the incident to investigators, although neighbors said they had heard loud noises from inside the house for about 15 minutes.
Investigators working on the case failed to make any arrests until they received an anonymous letter in January 2020 to the Santa Ana police, in which Benning was implicated in the murder of his ex-boyfriend.
Benning was arrested today near her home in Austin, Texas, and remanded in custody following an extensive investigation, including forensic tests. She is expected to be extradited already to the state of California to face murder charges, authorities said.
Five years after the alleged murder of her boyfriend, Benning had settled in Las Vegas in 2001, and later in Austin.
Hervey was found dead with multiple stab wounds to the chest and body, but the weapon of the crime was never recovered, the police report said. Orange County .
