The elderly woman’s life is not in danger and is being treated at a Wyoming hospital after the incident in the famous national park.
The 71-year-old Pennsylvania woman was gored by a bison’s horn in Yellowstone National Park yesterday, “in the third such incident since the beginning of the year,” officials said.
The visitor and her daughter had approached the bison in their vehicle near Yellowstone Lake, “causing the male to initiate the attack,” park officials said.
“This incident remains under investigation and we have no further information to share,” they added.
Most recently, on June 27 a 34-year-old man from Colorado was mauled by a male bison in a similar situation and suffered a wound to his arm.
“The man was walking with his family on the visitor’s path when the male bison charged at the group. The family members did not leave the place and the bison hit the man with its horn,” officials said at the time.
On May 30, a 25-year-old girl from Ohio was attacked after coming within 10 feet of the park’s bison. As a result, she suffered several injuries, including a punctured horn.
In that incident several people had approached the bison at a time when the regulation states that visitors must stay 8 meters away from the large and powerful animals.
Officials advise all visitors to stay at least 8 feet away from wildlife such as bison, deer, ducks or coyotes.
“If necessary they should change their route to avoid interaction with wild animals. Bison in particular are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans,” the instructions advise.
