A woman who stabbed her abusive boyfriend has been sentenced today to eight years in prison by a court in Britain.
Kayley Mahood was acquitted today of “murder” against 31-year-old boxer Oliver O’Toole, but the jury found her guilty of “negligent murder”.
She had stabbed him in the heart but claimed she had acted in self-defense at the event at her home in the town of Burton-on-Trent on July 25 last year.
Following the sentencing, O’Toole’s relatives, including his mother, said they were disappointed and neglected by the court.
The latter said: “We felt today that being judged was my son who died. The court and society must look at the matter differently. “This was another life taken from domestic violence and the crime of cold steel.”
“If someone takes the knife and decides to hurt someone, even the death of a person, he should be punished,” added the victim’s mother.
“One day she will be free and go on with her life, while my son will not. His three children will never have a father with whom to share life.
It was suggested in court that Mahood had ‘abandoned’ O’Toole as he was bleeding to death, telling witnesses he ‘did it himself’.
Police body camera footage showed the 30-year-old’s arrest following the incident, during which she was cut over her left eye.
Stafford Court heard it said the couple had had a stormy relationship with episodes of violence from both parties.
Mahood said she was punched in the face by her partner and received the wound near the eye, before stabbing O’Toole, the father of three.
Judge Kristina Montgomery told the defendant that there were ‘fierce and frequent conflicts between the two’ which consequently resulted in violence.
She said Mahood had used the weapon to avenge the violence even before the murder: “I accept that you did not intend to kill him as this kind of violence has happened before between you.”
“But I’m convinced that by arming yourself with the kitchen knife, which was found with Oliver O’Toole’s blood on it, and hitting it the way you demonstrated here in court, you were trying to cause serious injury.”
After being previously attacked by O’Toole the events of the morning of July 25 seem to have put a lid on Mahood, the judge concluded.
Defense attorney Rachel Brand suggested that the moderate force of the blow suggested the defendant had acted out of fear.
But prosecutors said Mahood intended to kill him or cause grievous bodily harm.
They added that O’Toole had crashed into the backyard of the house after being seen being held through walls.
