About 2,500 people were arrested this Sunday after protesting against Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine.
A Moscow police spokeswoman said 1,700 people were arrested in the capital, while many more were arrested in St Petersburg’s second-largest city.
In total, the number of detainees is 2,575, who took part in protests organized by 49 Russian countries.
CNN reports police have used electric shocks and violence against protesters.
Russian police warned that all attempts to hold on Sunday would be suppressed and participants would face charges.
On Friday, jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny urged supporters to stage protests Sunday in all central squares of Russia and around the world.
