Several thousand illuminated jekle demonstrators gathered today in front of the transport ministry in Madrid against the rise in fuel prices.
Following unprecedented truck protests, the Spanish government announced a € 1 billion reward plan for price reductions.
But protesters say that is not enough as the price will rise again and the reduction of only 20 cents does not change anything.
The government offer was 0.20 euros compensation for each liter of fuel or a single payment of 1,250 euros for each vehicle, writes AFP.
“Most truckers need to work and with this agreement we are offering them the opportunity,” said Transport Minister Raquel Sanchez after talks with the associations.
Drivers in Spain have blocked roads and ports since March 14 to raise awareness of fuel prices.
The strike has upset several supply chains and shortages in short-lived foods such as eggs and dairy products.
One of the trade union groups completely rejected the government’s offer.
Protesters with Spanish and regional flags marched today along Madrid’s main boulevard, La Castellana, blocking traffic.
