At least three people were killed and dozens of houses damaged in explosions in the Russian city of Belgorod near the border with Ukraine, the regional governor said on Sunday.
The governor of Belgorod reported several explosions in the city of about 400,000 people, about 40 km north of the border with Ukraine.
A Russian official, Andrei Klishas, said Ukraine was behind the attack.
“The death of civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Belgorod are a direct act of aggression on the part of Ukraine and require the strongest response, including a military one,” he said, although Ukraine does not confirm such a thing.
Moscow has often accused Kiev of multiple attacks in Belgorod and other regions bordering Ukraine since Russia’s February 24 invasion. But the latter have not confirmed responsibility for the attacks.
Meanwhile the battle continues in the east, the city of Lisinhasnk could fall at any moment.
An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has admitted that as fighting intensified in the country’s last major stronghold in the strategic eastern province of Luhansk, the city could soon be in the control of the invaders.
Oleksiy Arestovych said Russian forces had crossed the Siverskiy Donets River and were approaching the key city from the north.
Ukrainian troops on the eastern frontline describe heavy artillery barrages in residential areas, while Kiev says Moscow has stepped up rocket attacks on towns far from the main eastern battlegrounds.
