The Ukrainian army seems to have started the war on Russian territory, a sudden development for the country that so far has been in a defensive position.
Russian authorities were forced to place two villages in an emergency situation and evacuate dozens of locals due to Ukrainian bombing in the area, Russian media report.
RIA Novosti says that four people were injured in an explosion near the village of Zhuravlyovka, an attack that according to her originated from inside Ukraine and this is confirmed by Interfax, according to which both Zhuravlyovka and the other village Niekhoteyevka were put in a state of emergency. About 180 people there are said to have been evacuated to the city of Belgorod as a result of an explosion at an ammunition depot.
Fox News says it can not independently verify the reported attack, although reports of such an episode, which in fact constitute a major setback for Russia, originated with the Russian state media itself.
The incident comes at a time when the Moscow military has begun redeploying as well as in the wake of ongoing peace talks in Turkey, with Russia claiming to be committed to facilitating the attacks and Ukraine insisting on a final solution, which would include military neutrality in exchange for full membership in the European Union.
