Actor Tony Sirico, who played the beloved gangster Paulie Walnuts on HBO’s popular series, “The Sopranos,” and was often cast in Woody Allen’s casts, has sadly passed away at the age of 79. The actor’s brother, Robert Sirico, a Catholic priest, said in a Facebook post that:
With deep pain but pride, immense love and priceless memories, the family of Gennaro Anthony Sirico was informed of his death on the morning of July 8th.
The causes of death are not disclosed. Sirico starred in the drama series that launched in 1999 and became a hit in the prestige TV era. Although he had small parts in 6 films directed by Woody Allen from 1994 to 2016, Sirico was not well known before his role in the TV series, where he was a capo in the mafia family headed by Tony Soprano.
The character Paulie Walnuts was a strong-willed criminal, occasionally kind and comical, but always loyal to his boss. Born in Brooklyn on July 29, 1942, Sirico spent 20 months in prison for gun possession in the early 1970s. He left behind 2 children and, as his brother said, a large number of grandchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
