Among the Albanians who were called to leave Ukraine immediately yesterday was the Top Channel team.
Journalist Muhamed Veliu and cameraman Besfort Kryeziu left Kiev amid urgent Western calls for all foreign nationals.
Invited to the studio of the central news edition on Top Channel, Muhamed Veliu spoke about what seems to be the last hours of peace in Ukraine.
Muhammad, what did Ukraine leave behind?
Not in vain during my reports from Ukraine, I have often repeated that it seemed a calm before fortune. In Kiev, for example, life goes on normally, citizens go to work, but on the other hand Ukraine is not sitting idly by. They are preparing militarily, they are training, there are many women who are joining the Ukrainian army to defend their country. One of the main news of yesterday was that the number of sales of Kiev radios had increased, as it is understood that a possible Russian attack will destroy all mobile phones. Has the determination to face a possible aggression but the biggest fear is from air strikes. In terms of frontal armed attacks, Ukraine is best prepared.
There are many statements as to when Russia could attack Ukraine are the most likely scenarios? Let’s talk a little about the positioning of Russian troops on the ground. How are they decided today that we are talking about?
We have seen many dates, the CIA has provided information that the attack may be immediate. There are reports that it could happen on Tuesday, or Wednesday. This is very hard to say, no one knows. This is in the mind of President Vladimir Putin himself, but if we look at the map of the deployment of Russian military troops, it is an extraordinary concentration, there are naval forces in the Black Sea in Crimea, there are other forces in Belarus and on the Russian border with Ukraine. There are three active drills, which are taking place to make you think the attack will be quick, as military war analysts say. But it depends on the decision that Putin has made or will make.
For years you report political developments but not only. How was your experience reporting from a country on the brink of war?
During these 8 years since Russia invaded Crimea all the news have been present on Top Channel through various agencies and thanks to the care of our international news colleague, Irida Vasia. But it is another thing to be and watch, to testify to the Top Channel audience those developments that you see, that change from minute to minute. An extraordinary experience, I call myself lucky that Top Channel gave me the opportunity and the news chief, Altin Kreka entrusted me with going to Ukraine, to bring the latest developments. It was a team work, without the help of the operator, Besford Kryeziu, I would not be able to follow what was happening there. It was a daily coordination of work with the news editor, Erina Matraxhiu, with all the guys of direct connections that enabled the connection of the filming step by step there.
