This warehouse is just one of the hot spots of Elbasan. The cement plant located just below and the metallurgical plant, have made this city one of the most polluted. The metallurgical plant “Çeliku i Partisë” in Elbasan was one of the most important industrial works in Albania, built in the `70s.
It was capable of processing over 1 million tons of iron ore and producing about 250,000 tons of iron and steel pipes per year. This complex included the construction of 520 facilities, 47 km of internal railway and 22 km of highways. The giant employed about 12,000 workers, making it the largest industrial complex in the country.
Equally large is the pollution that this complex left behind. Various studies conducted by the Faculty of Natural Sciences during the years 2012-2015 have found that soil pollution near the former metallurgical area, where Kurumi is located today, has a content of heavy metals tens to hundreds of times higher than standard or norm.
Specifically from the data obtained through measurement Nickel content ranges from 400 to 28,000 ppm in specific areas. In other words, up to 400 times higher than the permissible limit of 75 ppm of the European Directive. Lead was also found in the amount of 400 to 800 ppm, but in some specific areas it ranges in levels of 5,000-20,000 ppm.
Zinc was found 17 to 70 times higher than the norm, Iron was found in quantities ranging from 14,000 to 80,000 ppm. Copper in some areas was found up to 20,000 ppm. So at levels up to 150 times higher than the EU standard which is 140 ppm. Chromium is also found in fairly high quantities, up to 2000 ppm. Even 6 km away from the source of pollution.
The high pollution results were reconfirmed again during the monitoring carried out by some environmental experts. In March 2019 they analyzed the quality of surface water near the Polis bridge in Labinot Fushë, before entering the city of Elbasan and another sampling point was located in Bradashesh, near the former Metallurgical Plant, about 5 km west of the city of Elbasan.
Simultaneously, three arable land samples were taken for chemical-physical analysis: two samples in Labinot Fushë, including land irrigated by the river and one soil sample in Bradashesh. The results showed that agricultural lands in this area are with high levels of heavy metals and significantly above the critical values set by international guides. These are materials such as cadmium, nickel, copper and chromium in the three soil sampling points, and copper in the irrigated soil in Labinot Fushë and in the soil in Bradashesh. These data show a potential threat to the health of people in local communities as well as the environment in general.
“This is about catastrophic pollution, probably one of the highest in the world. Everything is contaminated, soil, drinking water, food. We analyzed the chicken eggs and they turned out to be inedible “said Ahmet Mehmeti, environmental expert.
