In August 2021, Eleni Skënderi, only 13 years old, was hit by a truck while crossing the white lines in the Astiri area.
The truck passed over the minor causing severe trauma with serious injuries to internal organs, spine and pelvis.
““The doctor called me and it looked like I was in a dream.” said Edmond Skënderaj, father of Eleni Skënderaj.
Ellen undergoes two emergency surgeries near the Trauma Hospital to keep her alive. But, for the intervention in the spine, nothing could be done for the minor in Albania.
She stayed in this hospital for almost two months without being able to reduce the high temperature she had all the time. This condition not only did not allow further treatment, but was seriously endangering the girl’s life. Found in this situation, the doctors recommended the family to send him for specialized treatment abroad.
Edmond, an immigrant in Italy, left everything behind after his daughter’s accident. The little money he had saved from emigration ‘disappeared’ during these difficult days. Treating the girl abroad cost 80 thousand dollars, money they could not afford. The girl was struggling with death and time. Every passing day increased the risk to life. In this situation they asked for help and a fundraising campaign was launched. Within a week thousands of citizens and immigrants donated from their savings making it possible to raise the amount required by the hospital.
“The doctors told me that if you find any possibility send them abroad, but we had no money. So we went to the Different Weekend and within 8 days the money was collected“Said Edmond Skënderaj, the father of Eleni Skënderaj.
Eleni was taken in serious condition to a specialized hospital in Turkey. There they learned that due to staying for a long time in Tirana, he had contracted a serious infection in the spine. Hence, the first battle was with infection.
““In Tirana there was a high temperature that did not fall, we were told that he had an infection and he had to be treated first”, said Edmond Skënderaj, father of Eleni Skënderaj
Once the infection stabilized a series of other interventions were initiated in the pelvic bones and spine. The miracle happened. Although when he left he was in the throes of life, on January 2, 2022 Eleni was able to come to Albania on his own two feet.
Today, the girl still has some difficulties, but she has returned to school, where she stays for three hours every day. His father, Edmond, accompanies him every morning in a taxi. He waits for her when she finishes her lesson and takes her by taxi again to a physiotherapy center. Eleni has made a noticeable improvement and has become the strength of the whole family.

Convinced that what happened was a second life for her, the family thanked the thousands of Albanians who contributed to her daughter’s recovery.
