Tourists and passers-by, and even children, took pictures as a man poured gasoline on himself and set fire to clothes in the center of the resort town, as people believed the gruesome sight a distraction game.
The man wearing a black cape set himself on fire in front of the historic Galata Tower in Turkey as attendees posed for pictures of the burning man.
Young children watched the horrific incident unfold before them.
A video circulating on social media shows the man barely walking as flames erupt around his body.
Consequently he releases a scary drape that he held in his hand as part of the scary costume and spreads his arms, until then he falls to his knees and falls to the ground.
One user who posted a picture of a child photographing a burn on his knees commented, “We live in a dark world!”
Incredible reports from the country say the man had survived and had spoken to authorities after being assisted by locals and ambulance workers.
Many of the commenters on the network were not convinced of the veracity of the incident saying it could have been a ‘street performance’.
“There were so many people and shopkeepers, no one intervened to prevent one person’s desperate attempt,” wrote another.
