Traditional Syrian drummers of the month of Ramadan, known as ‘Musarati’, took to the streets of the capital Damascus before dawn to wake up the fasting Muslims at the first “Syfyr” meal.
Old drummer Hassan Alrashi, says that the tradition dates back to times when there were no alarm clocks.
“Our ancestors relied only on Musaharat to wake up, because at that time there were no bells or cell phones.”
“Now times have changed but people in our country do not forget their traditions.
“Musarat’s character is also part of the tradition so we will not forget or abandon it.”
“During the holy month of Ramadan, children do not sleep until they hear Musarat and their drum.
The other Musat Sharif Harsho, shows that their drums are created as in the time of the old tradition.
“I do this only with my voice, with a simple goat skin drum, and this wooden stick.”
“The drum is the same as it was used in the past, it has not changed over the centuries,” he says.
