At least 19 people have been killed, including nine children, in a fire that engulfed a residential building in the Bronx, New York.
A firefighter confirmed the death toll, while another confirmed that 9 children were among them.
“This is one of the worst fires we’ve seen here in New York City,” Mayor Eric Adams told a news conference.
At least 32 people have been injured and taken to hospital while in life-threatening condition, FDNY commissioner Daniel Nigro said earlier Sunday. Adams said a total of 63 people were injured.
Foreign media also write that the victims were on the upper floors of the building that was engulfed in flames.
About 200 members of the New York City Fire Department were at the scene in a 19-story apartment building. The fire started shortly before 11 a.m. in a duplex apartment on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building, FDNY said.
